Choose whichever location you can reach without negotiating a bridge. The Myrtle Beach shop covers the Grand Strand — Conway at 10.7 miles, Surfside Beach at 11.3, Murrells Inlet at 15.6, North Myrtle Beach at 20.7 and Little River at 25.1. Charleston works the metro from 1010 Folly Rd: downtown at 5.1 miles, West Ashley at 6.3, North Charleston at 9.8, Mount Pleasant at 11.0.

James Island is the exception to the usual disclaimer, because the Charleston shop is on it, three tenths of a mile in. Every other town on those two lists is one we serve rather than sit in, and the mileage is the honest way to choose. Grand Strand drivers have a single shop to aim at, and it sits inside the Bypass corridor instead of out on the beach side of 17. Distance decides.

Neither address is hard to find. 108 April Gray Ln is off the US-17 Bypass in Myrtle Beach, and the shop has been in that building since December 2006. Coming south from North Myrtle Beach, SC-31 keeps you out of the Bypass crawl for most of those 20.7 miles before you drop back onto 17. From Conway, US-501 runs straight at it — 10.7 miles, one road, no cleverness required.

Charleston is simpler. 1010 Folly Rd has been the address since 2014, on James Island itself, 5.1 miles from downtown. West Ashley and North Charleston drivers use I-526 and come down Folly Road from the north; Mount Pleasant crosses the Ravenel Bridge, 11 miles door to door. Johns Island is 12.2 out. Summerville is the long one at 29.8.

Both buildings run Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. They are closed Saturday and Sunday, which catches people out regularly, because a car that starts making a noise on a Friday evening is a car nobody can look at until Monday morning. Plan around that. If the problem showed up midweek, send the form midweek.

The message lands with the location you named and gets read during business hours, not at nine on a Sunday night, so a form sent Friday evening sits until Monday morning. What comes back is a day to bring the car in — not a price. A price quoted before anyone has driven the car or pulled codes is a guess dressed up as an estimate. Detail is cheap. Specifics cut diagnostic labor, and diagnostic labor is the expensive part of any European repair. A technician who reads “makes a noise” starts at zero. A tech who reads “metallic tick at cold start, gone by the end of the street” already has two or three candidates in mind before the hood is up.

• The noise and when it happens. Cold start, first turn out of the driveway, above 45 mph, only under braking.
• Cold or warm. A tick that clears after two minutes is a different fault from one that never leaves.
• The dash message, word for word. “Drivetrain Malfunction” and a plain check engine light send a tech down different roads.
• Recent work by another shop. Who did it, what they replaced, and what it was supposed to fix. This one saves the most time.
• Mileage and your last receipt. Even a rough number tells us which maintenance items are already due.
