US-501 Runs Straight to the Myrtle Beach Shop

Take US-501 out of Conway toward the beach, past Carolina Forest, and the shop is about 19 minutes away. From the Coastal Carolina side you’re already on 501, and outside the summer weekends, when beach traffic backs up toward the Intracoastal Waterway bridge, it’s one of the easier drives on the Grand Strand.

From Myrtle Beach, US-17 runs south along the coast through Murrells Inlet to Pawleys Island, where drivers use the same shop.

Driving Through Flood Water Can Damage a Car You Can’t See

When roads around Conway flood, driving through standing water is the fastest way to turn a running car into a major repair. Water pulled into the air intake can stop an engine instantly. Then it’s a big job. Water that reaches the cabin soaks the carpets, and on many European cars the wiring and control modules sit right under them.

Smaller damage shows up later. Wheel bearings and brakes that sat in water start to grind or pull, and electrical faults come and go for weeks. If the car went through deep water, have it checked even if it seems fine. If the engine stalled in the water, don’t keep trying to restart it.

Sort an Older Car’s Repairs by Urgency

When an older European car needs more than you want to pay for at once, ask for the repairs ranked by what keeps you safe, then by what protects the engine. Brakes come first. Then oil and coolant leaks, because a slow leak that gets topped up for months eventually becomes an overheated engine.

Window motors can wait. So can a sticky sunroof. Ask the technician which items are urgent and which can be scheduled later, and what the car is likely to need over the next year. That last answer is often the most useful one.

The VW and Audi 2.0T Has Two Common Weak Spots

On the turbocharged 2.0 engine in a Jetta GLI, GTI, Tiguan or A4, the PCV valve and the water pump deserve the most attention. A torn PCV diaphragm causes a whistle at idle, a rough idle and sometimes oil consumption. The plastic water pump housing tends to seep coolant with age.

Both warn you early. A faint coolant smell after a drive, or pink crust under the intake manifold, points to the pump, while a whistle that changes or stops when the oil cap comes off with the engine idling points to the PCV valve.

Have the A/C Checked Before Summer Comes Back

Winter and early spring are the right time to have a weak A/C looked at, before the first 90-degree day fills the schedule. A system that blew lukewarm last August won’t fix itself over the winter. The leak just keeps going.

Running the A/C costs fuel, too. The U.S. Department of Energy says that in very hot conditions, A/C use can reduce a conventional vehicle’s fuel economy by more than 25%, especially on short trips.
