• Audi. The 2.0T timing chain tensioner is the one to know. Two seconds of rattle on a cold start is the whole warning you get, and a chain that jumps introduces the valves to the pistons. Carbon on the intake valves is the slower, quieter version of the same story.
• BMW. VANOS solenoids clog with oil varnish and throw rough idle, hesitation and a check engine light that a cheap reader blames on a coil. Cleaning buys time. Replacement settles it.
• Mercedes-Benz. AIRMATIC. The car sits low overnight, then squats at one corner, then the compressor cooks itself trying to lift a body that a leaking strut keeps dropping. Find the leak before anybody buys a compressor, or the new one starts the same clock over again.
• Porsche. PDK service is a schedule item, not a repair. Fluid and filter on the interval keeps the clutch packs and the mechatronic unit civil, and the cars that arrive with harsh engagement are almost always the ones that skipped it twice.
• Volkswagen. The DSG follows the same rule: service the fluid and filter, or the mechatronic unit starts making shift decisions on its own, usually in traffic. Thermostat housings and water pumps round out the 2.0T list.

• Jaguar. That ZF 8-speed automatic left the factory described as filled for life. It isn’t. Fluid that looked fine at 60,000 miles is exactly why a shift lands hard at 100,000, and corroded grounds account for most of the electrical faults that get blamed on modules.
• MINI. The N14 timing chain tensioner rattles for two or three seconds at startup, and that noise is your only notice. Turbo oil feed lines and carbon follow behind it. Grade matters here: fueleconomy.gov measures a 1% to 2% mileage penalty for running 10W-30 where 5W-30 is specified, and this engine minds its oil far more than it minds the fuel gauge.
• Land Rover. Air suspension is the headline. Compressors wear, height sensors drift, and a Range Rover greeting you on its bump stops has an air spring bleeding down overnight. Work out which corner loses air before ordering a single part.

The 12-volt battery strands more Teslas than the high-voltage pack ever has. It fails the way it does in any car, only the driver never hears a slow crank as a warning, so the first symptom is a door handle that won’t wake up. It just quits. Brakes, suspension and diagnostics otherwise look familiar.

Pads last a long time on these cars because regeneration does most of the slowing, and that is true of anything that brakes electrically. Federal guidance says the same about hybrids: the Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center puts hybrids and plug-in hybrids on the same general maintenance schedule as conventional vehicles, with brake systems that generally last longer because of regenerative braking. Long life carries a cost. Calipers that rarely work seize, especially on cars parked near saltwater.
